Organizationally Situated Authorship: Defined
No matter the document being produced, a certain context/situation and set of ideas and values remains behind the creation of it. Though values, attitudes and ethics may vary among organizations, all professional writing involves considering elements like audience, purpose, accessibility, and so on. Along with this, the writers of various promotional pieces all come from different positions within the organization or company producing said document. Professional writing, which encompasses all these aspects and more, can better be defined as organizationally situated authorship.
So the question remains, how does organizationally situated authorship present and influence the various company documents and promotional materials of small and large businesses? As members of society we are always consuming, consuming, consuming, whether it’s products and items themselves or messages being fed via internet, social media, or print flyers. That being said, there is constant consumption and messages being fed to consumers that further influences the choices they make when shopping. Large big box chain stores, department stores, local businesses and small businesses all equally take part in promoting and presenting themselves to reach their intended audience, with both similar and contrasting means of doing so. Writing then becomes necessary and essential to emphasize and put forth various documents and materials related to the business’ brand, products, mission, values, etc.
Relation To This Project
The aim of this project is to take a closer look at exactly how both small and large businesses present themselves and appeal to their audience through written communication- their audience being consumers and prospective consumers. Businesses, in particular, often use “About Us” pages to focus on and articulate their values, and company and work ethic.
As a whole, nearly all the small and large businesses analyzed in this project, utilized the creation of an “About Us” or "Company Information" page to articulate these matters to their audience and consumers. These documents are all examples of organizationally situated authorship as they are written by company professionals with different positions, purposes, and contexts in mind.
